Colorado's water is hard through most of the populated Front Range and the western slope, fed by aquifers and mountain sources that carry a real mineral load. In a top-load washer that shows up as inlet valve screens that gradually restrict and lengthen the fill, and a chalky residue under the tub ring and around the agitator base — not as scale on a heating element, because most top-loaders heat nothing themselves. The high, dry climate is otherwise kind to these machines; there is very little of the damp-tub odor that dominates the Southeast. What Colorado does have is a lot of unheated garage and basement laundry space, where supply hoses are exposed to hard freezes and a cold motor coupler takes the strain on the first load of a winter morning.
