Idaho's water is hard through most of the Snake River Plain and the southern population centers, carrying enough mineral load to gradually restrict a top-loader's inlet valve screens and leave a chalky film under the tub ring and around the agitator base. Because these machines have no heating element of their own, the fill side is where the hardness actually registers, and a fill that has quietly stretched from four minutes to ten is usually the first sign. Rural Idaho adds iron-bearing well water in a lot of counties, which stains a porcelain tub and eventually rusts it through at the lip.
