Nevada has among the very hardest water in the United States, and in the Las Vegas valley in particular the Colorado River supply regularly tests above 250 ppm. That is a heavy, continuous mineral load, and on a top-loader it goes almost entirely into the fill side — inlet valve screens that clog until a four-minute fill takes ten or more, and a thick chalky film under the tub ring and along the agitator. Because most top-loaders have no heating element, there is no scale problem there; the valve takes it all. Dry desert air spares Nevada the mold complaints of the Southeast, but garage laundry rooms are close to universal here and summer heat is genuinely hard on rubber supply hoses and plastic components.
