Virginia's water is moderately hard through much of the state, harder in the limestone valleys west of the Blue Ridge and softer across parts of the Piedmont and Tidewater. Where it is hard, a top-loader's inlet valve screens restrict over time and a mineral film settles under the tub ring. Humidity is the more consistent factor statewide, and Virginia summers keep laundry rooms damp enough that a steel tub under a closed lid never quite dries — the real source of the musty-smell complaint on a machine with no gasket. Tidewater and Eastern Shore homes add salt air, which attacks the porcelain tub lip and the bleach dispenser housing.
