Common Questions

What is the average cost to repair a washing machine?

Washing machine repair averages $180 to $250, with most homeowners paying around $220. Top-load repairs tend to sit at the lower end of that range, because the parts that commonly fail — lid switch, motor coupler, drive belt, agitator dogs, inlet valve — are quick to reach compared with the equivalent job on a front-loader. Complex repairs such as a transmission can reach $450 or more.

How much is a call out fee for a washing machine?

Typically $75 to $130, and many technicians credit it against the repair if you go ahead with the work. The technician we connect you with will confirm their own fee and policy before coming out. There is never a charge for the referral itself.

What is the average lifespan of a top-load washer?

Ten to fourteen years is the usual range, and traditional agitator machines frequently outlast it. Speed Queen and older direct-drive units routinely run past twenty with periodic repairs. High-efficiency models with electronic controls tend toward the lower end. Age by itself is not a reason to replace a machine — what the repair costs against what a replacement costs is the real question.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a top-load washer?

Usually to repair. A reasonable rule is that if the repair costs more than half what a comparable new machine would, and the washer is already past ten years old, replacement deserves serious thought. Applied to the common faults, that means lid switches, couplers, belts, valves, pumps and agitator dogs are almost always worth fixing at any age. Transmissions and tub bearings on a machine over ten are where the sums get close.

Who should I call to fix a washing machine?

An independent licensed technician who works on your type of machine regularly. That last part matters more than people expect: a lot of general appliance businesses will not take top-load transmission work, and a technician who mostly services front-loaders is slower on a top-load fault set. Call us and we will route you to someone who does this specifically.

Why won't my top-load washer spin but the motor runs?

On a direct-drive machine — Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Amana, Roper — that is the classic symptom of a sheared motor coupler, the plastic part designed to fail before the motor or transmission takes damage. On a belt-drive machine it usually means a snapped or badly slipping belt. Both are inexpensive parts and well-understood jobs.

Do you repair HE top-loaders without an agitator?

Yes. High-efficiency impeller models are a large and growing share of what the network services. They bring a different complaint list — cleaning performance, detergent residue, unbalanced loads and balance codes rather than agitator and transmission faults. Worth knowing: some of those complaints describe a machine working exactly as designed, and a good technician will say so rather than sell you a repair.

What brands do you service?

Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG and Speed Queen each have their own page here. The network also services Kenmore, Amana, Roper, Hotpoint, Frigidaire and Insignia machines. Kenmore, Amana and Roper top-loaders are built on the Whirlpool platform, so a technician who knows one knows the others. We are an independent referral network and are not affiliated with, authorized by, or endorsed by any appliance manufacturer.
