A top-loading washer is its own machine with its own weak points. Its lid switch is a safety interlock, and when it fails the washer will fill and wash and then simply refuse to spin or drain. Its agitator drives the load through small plastic ratchet inserts that wear out. On direct-drive models a plastic-and-rubber coupler joins the motor to the transmission and is deliberately built to shear first, protecting everything expensive behind it. Underneath sits a transmission, a clutch, and a tub hung on suspension rods with a fluid-filled balance ring to absorb an uneven load. None of those parts exist on a front-loader. That is why a general appliance listing is not much help when yours is the machine that has stopped.
