Codes describe symptoms, not causes. A drain error means the machine did not see the water leave within the time it expected; that could be the pump, a kinked hose, a blocked standpipe, or a lid switch that never gave permission to drain. A fill error means water did not arrive fast enough; that could be a closed tap, clogged inlet screens, or a failed valve. Reading a code as a parts list is the most common way people end up buying the wrong component.
These share a platform, so the codes overlap. LF (or Lf) is a long fill — the machine asked for water and did not get enough in time. LD (or Ld) is a long drain. uL is an unbalanced load, oL an overloaded one. dU points at the lid lock. Newer machines use paired F# and E# codes, where the F number identifies the system and the E number the specific fault, and those need the model's own chart to read properly.
GE top-loaders run their own architecture and their own code set rather than the Whirlpool one, and it varies more across model generations than the other brands do. Lid-lock faults, fill and drain timeouts and out-of-balance conditions are the common families. Because GE's codes differ meaningfully between platforms, this is one brand where reading the code against the specific model's service documentation genuinely matters.
Samsung uses a consistent scheme across recent machines. 4C or 4E is a water supply error. 5C or 5E is a drain error. UB or U6 is an unbalanced load. dC signals the lid is open or the lock has failed. 3C or 3E points at the motor. LC indicates a leak has been detected.
LG's codes are among the most readable. IE is an inlet or fill error. OE is a drain error. UE is an unbalanced load, by a wide margin the most common code LG owners call about. LE is a motor lock condition. dE is a lid or door error. PE points at the pressure sensor that reads water level.
Worth calling out separately: a great many Speed Queen top-loaders have mechanical controls and no diagnostic display at all. If yours has a dial and no screen, there is no code to look for and diagnosis is done the traditional way — by testing components. That simplicity is a large part of why these machines stay serviceable for decades. Electronically controlled Speed Queen models do report faults, and those are read against the model's own documentation.
Note the exact code, including whether it is a letter-number pair, and find the model number — usually on a plate under the lid or behind it. Note what the machine was doing when the code appeared and whether it repeats on a fresh cycle. A power cycle at the wall clears transient faults and is worth trying once.
