On a top-load washer the lid switch is a safety interlock. The machine is not permitted to spin the tub with the lid open, so it checks — and if that switch fails, or the strike that operates it has broken off, the machine behaves as though the lid is open forever. It will fill, it will wash, and then it will simply stop. On many models it will not drain either, which is why people describe this as "the washer stopped working" rather than "the washer will not spin". It is among the least expensive parts on the machine, commonly $100 to $200 fitted. Any technician who does not check it first is doing it backwards.
Whirlpool, Kenmore, Maytag, Amana and Roper direct-drive top-loaders connect the motor to the transmission through a small plastic-and-rubber coupling rather than a belt. It is deliberately the weakest link — when a load is too heavy or something jams, the coupler shears before the motor or the gearbox takes damage. That design does its job, which is why this is such a common repair and such a cheap one relative to what it protects. The symptom is distinctive: the motor runs, you can hear it working, and nothing at all turns.
Older belt-drive top-loaders use a rubber belt between motor and transmission. As it glazes and stretches it slips, which usually announces itself as a squeal that builds through the spin cycle before the tub gives up and turns slowly or not at all. A belt that has snapped outright gives you the same motor-runs-nothing-happens symptom as a broken coupler. Neither is an expensive part.
If the tub does spin but clothes come out soaking rather than damp, the clutch is the likely culprit. It is the assembly that brings the tub up to full spin speed, and as its friction material wears the tub never quite gets there. Nothing sounds broken — the cycle completes normally — it simply does not extract the water. This one gets misdiagnosed as a drainage problem surprisingly often.
A grinding or groaning noise that rises with the spin usually means the tub bearing. Sleeve bearings tend to squeal first, which is a useful warning; ball bearings can seize with less notice and create enough drag to stop the tub turning at all. This is the more serious end of the list, and on an older machine it is worth pricing against replacement.
Redistribute the load and run a spin cycle on its own — a badly unbalanced load will stop many machines from spinning as a protective measure, and that costs nothing to rule out. Check the lid closes fully and that the strike is intact. Check the drain hose is not kinked, since a machine that cannot drain often will not spin. Beyond that you are into the cabinet, and a top-loader's tub and transmission are heavy enough to be worth handing over.
