Alaska's water is generally soft, which spares top-loaders the mineral burden carried by machines across the limestone Midwest. Cold is the dominant factor instead, and a top-loader's vulnerable points in a cold snap are the supply hoses and the drain pump — not a filter trap, because most top-loaders don't have one. Any machine living in an unheated garage, arctic entry or crawlspace is at genuine risk of a split hose or a cracked pump housing. Cold does something less obvious too: the plastic-and-rubber motor coupler on direct-drive machines and the suspension rods that carry the tub both stiffen when they are cold, so a first cycle of the day in a freezing space is the hardest one that machine will run all week.
