Arizona has some of the hardest water in the country, routinely testing above 250 ppm where supply comes off the Colorado River. Because most top-loaders have no heating element of their own, that mineral load goes somewhere else: into the water inlet valve screens, which clog and stretch the fill cycle until a machine that used to fill in four minutes takes ten.
