Utah has some of the hardest water in the country, drawn largely from mountain aquifers with a heavy mineral load, and top-loaders here carry that burden continuously — inlet valve screens that clog until fills stretch well past where they started, and a thick chalky film under the tub ring and around the agitator base. The hardness also makes detergent markedly less effective, which is why residue complaints are so common along the Wasatch Front, particularly on high-efficiency impeller models. The dry climate is a genuine reprieve on the odor side; a Utah laundry room dries out properly between loads. Unheated garage laundry is common, and mountain-valley winters are more than cold enough to threaten a supply hose.
