Louisiana's soft water means minerals are rarely the problem in Central — humidity is. Start with the free fix: a machine that is not level on all four feet will walk and bang no matter how healthy it is. If it is level and still doing it, the suspension rods that hang the tub have usually lost their damping, or the balance ring has failed. Overloading makes both worse. It is worth fixing — an unbalanced spin damages other parts over time.
Ten to fourteen years is the usual range, and traditional agitator machines often outlast that — Speed Queen and older direct-drive units frequently run past twenty with routine repairs. High-efficiency models with electronic controls tend toward the lower end. Age alone is not a reason to replace a machine; what it costs to fix against what it would cost to replace is the actual question.
